“Increasing the Intelligent Vote:” Losing the 1916 Fight for Woman Suffrage in Iowa and the Resulting Appeal to Enfranchise White, Native Born Women

“Increasing the Intelligent Vote:” Losing the 1916 Fight for Woman Suffrage in Iowa and the Resulting Appeal to Enfranchise White, Native Born Women In-Person

To understand why the exhibit "Toward a Universal Suffrage: African American Women in Iowa and the Vote for All” is an important Iowa story, learn about the failed 1916 fight for woman’s suffrage in Iowa and how that failure re-directed the white suffragist battle from a state by state campaign to the winning strategy of a national amendment. That failure also motivated Iowa suffragists to focus their arguments on enfranchising white, native born women to counteract the vote of foreign immigrants and non-whites.
